Stretching out along a great arc of sunny coastline from Kirinda to Hambantota, some of the best-known Sri Lankan beaches include Jungle Beach, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa, Tallala, and Tangalle. One of the greatest attractions of the South Coast cruises is the opportunity to experience the world’s largest mammal, the blue whale, along with many other species of whales and dolphins. Onshore visits include the UNESCO World Heritage city of Galle Fort and the ancient Dondra Lighthouse at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, as well as turtle and migrant bird conservation projects. • Best season: November to April, when the south coast sea is calmest—this also overlaps with Mirissa's blue whale watching season.
  
  Mirissa sits at the center of Sri Lanka's south coast, within easy reach of Weligama, Unawatuna, Galle, and Tangalle. Sailing from here means calmer water than the open ocean whale-watching routes further out and a shorter transfer if you're staying anywhere between Galle and Matara.
