The Matara district of Sri Lanka experiences temperatures ranging from a high of 84°F (29°C) to 91°F (33°C) throughout the year. Humidity is generally high, ranging from 60% to 90%. There is intense sunshine from June to August, with cloudy skies. There are also variable light winds throughout the year. The southwest monsoon is active from May to September, and occasional showers and thunderstorms are expected, especially during the afternoon.          Thelijjawila Snake Farm is located 14 kilometers from Matara. This snake farm was started by Mr. James Appuhami in 1915. This is a small snake sanctuary. It is currently run by Mr. James Appuhami's grandchildren. You can see more than 15 species of snakes and spiders. You can also learn about venomous and non-venomous reptiles. Snakes are cared for at this place, and treatment for snakebites is also done on the premises. 

  1. Weherahena Buddhist Temple.

        Veherahena Viharaya is a very ancient temple located in Matara. It was built by Venerable Saddhatissa Thero in the early 20th century. The temple grounds extend to 5 acres. There are many ancient stories about Veherahena Viharaya. A 39-meter-high Buddha statue is built here. There is a Bodhi tree, which is considered to be a branch of the original Bodhi tree where the Buddha attained enlightenment, a stupa, a Bodhi pavilion, a Dhamma hall and several other meditation centers, as well as several artifacts, statues and paintings, and a collection of ancient artifacts and antiquities including coins, pottery and weapons from various periods in history. Veherahena Viharaya is open to visitors every day from 7 am to 6 pm.

  1. Kushta Raja Gala.

        This Kushta Raja Gala statue is located in the Weligama area of Matara, Sri Lanka. This statue is 383 centimeters tall. No information has been found so far to say who is in this statue, who created it, or when. However, after analyzing some of the things available here, historians conclude that it was built in the 6th or 7th century AD. The upper part of this statue is not covered, and the lower part is covered with a dhoti and a beautiful belt. It is decorated with several necklaces, bracelets on the hands, and anklets. There are many different ancient stories about this statue.

        Pigeon Island is located near the coast of Matara city. This is known as a beautiful island with a small temple. This island got its name because many pigeons lived on this island in the past. Many tourists come to see the beauty of this island. A bridge has been built to reach this island from the mainland.   1. Hummanaya Blow Hole.

        The Hummanaya, a wonderful creation of nature located on the south coast, ranks second among the Hummanayas in the world. It is located about 1.5 kilometers from the Kudawella beach in Matara city. There are many dry fish food stalls on both sides of the road leading to this Hummanaya. This is an extremely beautiful water flower. Since the sea waves are strong during the southwest monsoon, they spread like a water flower to a height of 40 to 50 feet. Depending on the nature of the sea waves, this waterfall can also spread up to a height of 100 to 150 feet. No matter how many times you look at this scene, you will never get tired of it.

  1. Turtle Point Batigama.

        Turtle Point Batigama is located in Matara, Dickwella town. This is one of the most beautiful places. When you visit this place, you can catch turtles and swim with them. There is also the possibility of releasing baby turtles into the sea. You can also relax on this beach. There are also many restaurants around this beach to eat delicious seafood. This is known as the best place to go to spend the day with turtles and enjoy delicious food. 

  1. The Shrine of Our Lady of Matara.

        The Matara Our Lady of the Assumption Church is located in the city of Matara. This church is said to have a history of more than 500 years. Catholics and many Buddhists come to worship. This church is said to have sunk several times. Finally, on November 12, 1912, this statue was placed in the current church. Although this church was also hit by the tsunami in December 2004 and the statue was swept away into the sea again, it is another surprise that a person found it within three days. Since this church is close to the sea, although it was hit by the tsunami, it was later renovated and made available for worship by the people.

  1. Matara Fort.

        Matara Fort is a historic fort located in the city of Matara, Sri Lanka. It was built by the Portuguese in 1595 and later expanded by the Dutch in 1640. Today, it houses several government offices, including the District Secretariat and courts. Matara Fort is 240 meters long and 13 meters thick, and is made of limestone, coral, and granite. The dry season is from November to April, making it ideal for visiting.
